Tattoos can be a wonderful medium to express something about yourself, bring life to a nifty idea or to add a bit of flare to your presence. That being said, the last thing anybody would want to happen is for your brand spanking new tattoo to be ruined or altered because of a silly mistake. Tattoo aftercare is just as, if not more important than getting the tattoo itself.
You need to be sure that you are taking the best possible care of your fresh tattoo. Beginner mistakes can be:
- Taking the bandage off too soon
- Removing the bandage with unclean hands
- Using the wrong kind of soap
- Wearing the wrong types of clothing
Luckily, there are a number of ways to prevent unwanted alterations to your tattoo, including our very own tattoo aftercare product.
Immediately after the tattoo
One of the biggest mistakes people make is taking the bandage off too early. If the ink has not properly set, this can skew the colour and sometimes even take some ink off altogether. We recommend leaving your bandage on for at least one and a half to two hours.
When it is time to take it off, you must ensure that your hands are both clean and dry to avoid getting any unwanted germs on the fresh skin. Remove the bandage slowly and with caution, if it sticks to your skin, run it under some cool water. Under no circumstances should you soak your tattoo for the next week. Stay away from baths, hot tubs, pools etc. While showers are fine, try and keep them relatively short.
Over the next few days
- Use the Afterinked tattoo aftercare cream. This will oxygenate and sterilise your skin and ensure that no infections come your way.
- Avoid wearing tight clothes that cause extra friction to the area – this will only irritate your skin.
- Over the next few days, your tattoo will begin to peel like a sunburn. Do NOT pick at the peeling skin – it will leave a nasty and noticeable scar.
- Run your tattoo under cool water once or twice over the healing period to make sure it stays clean.
- Do NOT use ay soaps with alcohol – this will burn your skin. If you are unsure about the soap, thoroughly read the ingredients!
If you follow these guidelines, you can be sure to have a fully healed, great looking tattoo in no time!
